Diabetes and the Eye

Dear Cheater,

A national study of blood sugar control was conducted a decade ago and widely published in all the major medical journals for doctors to read. That study, termed "National Diabetes Control and Complication Trial" found some startling statistics:

If a person controls their blood sugar well (A1C less than 6.05, frequent injections meaning 3x daily or insulin group, accompanied by a vigorous monitoring and excercise program) they are only half as likely to show any moderate signs of trouble in the retinal blood vessels... Additionally, well-controlled blood sugar reduces the likely hood of progression from a mild state of retinal trouble to severe, sight-threatening problems by a whopping 76%!!

One other fact: Diabetics should have an eye exam once per year, and it must include an inspection of the retina using the drops that dialate the pupil! (That means every 12 months, not every 13 months, by the way!) ... Early detection of retinal disease will permit laser surgeons to salvage sight...

These are the hard, cold facts... Perhaps you might be able to avoid cheating by posting this little article on your refrigerator door, and going out for a brisk walk, next time you are tempted....
