Dear Confused Patient,
Actually a diagnosis of
early glaucoma can be extremely tenuous, since the signs of
optic nerve death are very subtle in the early stages of the
disease, and since there are no symptoms of blurry vision or
field constriction at the earliest stages of the problem.
The problem is that
prople can not feel elevated pressure, and few eye doctors
agree on what is an ideal eye pressure... It seems that some
eyes can tolerate a fairly high eye pressure, while other
eyes suffer from poor perfusion even when the eye pressure
is in a range most would consider "normal".
So, your eye doctor is
probably acting in a prudent way, just like a general
practitioner doesn't usually prescribe medication for high
blood pressure based on one isolated high reading, but
rather has you return for follow-ups, to develop a profile
of your readings over time.
