Dear Good Grandchild:
No problem, just bring
him to me or any other licensed optometrist for a second
opinion. Many senior citizens are delighted when they learn
that a simple change in spectacle lenses clears their vision
enough to pass the PENDOT exam once again... Sometimes, a
more involved intervention is needed, such as cataract
surgery... and unfortunately, sometimes, a senior has to
forfeit their license, or have some amount of restriction,
such as driving only during the daylight hours.
The PENDOT requirements
for visual acuity are as follows:
At least one eye must
see better than 20/40 in order for the person to drive at
night... and, at least one eye must be able to achieve at
least 20/70 for the person to be allowed to drive during the
daylight hours.
PENDOT is very strict
in it's application of these standards and for good reason:
A visually impaired driver can unwillingly cause major loss
of life and property. Still, I'd rather be driving on the
same highway with your grandpa than with an intoxicated
20/20 youngster!
